The Backstory

Records show a market here in 1014 AD. The current Victorian structure dates to 1851. It was a wholesale market for centuries but transformed into a retail/tourist market in the 1990s-2000s. The market nearly closed in the 1990s but was saved by local campaigners.

Local Secret

"Go Wednesday or Thursday morning (8-10am) before tourist crowds arrive. Saturday is a mob scene—avoid if possible. The chorizo sandwich and raclette are legendary. Many vendors offer free samples. Bring cash as some stalls don't take cards."
