The Backstory
Built in 1859 after a fire destroyed the old Palace of Westminster. The tower was renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012 for Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee. Big Ben (the bell) weighs 13.7 tons and has chimed almost continuously since 1859 except during wars and restoration.
Local Secret
"Cross Westminster Bridge to the South Bank for the best angle without crowds. The tower is best photographed at dusk when lights come on. Tours of the tower require advance booking months ahead and UK residency or special permission."
