Union Square Greenmarket

"Union Square Greenmarket is NYC's most famous farmers market, operating Monday/Wednesday/Friday/Saturday year-round. Over 100 regional farmers sell produce, meats, cheeses, breads, and flowers directly to consumers. It's also a major transit hub (six subway lines) and historical site of protests and political gatherings. The market embodies NYC's connection to upstate farms and local food culture."

The Backstory

The Greenmarket started in 1976 with just 12 farmers as NYC's food culture was collapsing. It revived the farm-to-city connection and sparked the farmers market movement nationally. Union Square itself has been a protest and gathering site since the 1800s—from labor rallies to 9/11 memorials.

Local Secret

"Go Saturday for the most vendors (over 100). Arrive early (8-9am) for best selection before office workers swarm at lunch. Buy apple cider donuts and maple syrup from upstate vendors. Cash is preferred by many farmers. The square is also great for people-watching—street performers, chess players, and political activists."
