The Backstory

The original basilica was built by Constantine in 326 AD. The basilica took 120 years to build and bankrupted the papacy, partly funding the Protestant Reformation. Bernini designed the surrounding colonnade in the 1660s.

"Go at 7am opening to skip lines entirely. The basilica is free, but climbing the dome costs €10 (elevator + stairs)—the view is worth it. Dress code: no shoulders or knees showing."
