The Backstory

The building was Bankside Power Station, designed in 1947 and decommissioned in 1981. Converted to a museum and opened in 2000, transforming London's art scene. The Turbine Hall is 3,400 square meters and hosts major installations. The 2016 expansion added 60% more gallery space.

Local Secret

"The Turbine Hall installation is free and changes annually—often the most memorable part. Go to the 10th floor viewing terrace for free panoramic views of St. Paul's Cathedral. The museum stays open until 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Skip the restaurant; eat elsewhere in Southwark."
