The Backstory

Built 1675-1710 after the Great Fire of London destroyed the medieval cathedral. Wren's Baroque masterpiece survived WWII bombing while the surrounding city burned. The dome was inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. It's the seat of the Bishop of London.

Local Secret

"Buy tickets online to skip queues. The dome climb (528 steps, no elevator) is exhausting but worth it—spectacular views from the top. The Whispering Gallery (259 steps up) has acoustics where whispers travel around the circular walls. Go on Sunday for free entry during services (no sightseeing during worship)."
