The Backstory

Built as one of the 'Magnificent Seven' cemeteries encircling London during the Victorian burial crisis. It became fashionable to be buried here in elaborate tombs. Fell into disrepair in the 1970s but was rescued by volunteers. Now a protected historic site and nature reserve.

Local Secret

"The East Cemetery (£5) is self-guided and includes Karl Marx's grave. The West Cemetery tour (£15, book ahead) is far more atmospheric with Victorian Gothic tombs and Egyptian Avenue. Go in autumn when leaves create a golden canopy. Combine with a walk on Hampstead Heath."
