Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamam

"Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamam is a meticulously restored 16th-century Ottoman bathhouse designed by the legendary architect Mimar Sinan. After decades of abandonment, it reopened in 2012 as a luxury hamam experience combining historical authenticity with modern hygiene standards. The ritual includes time in the hot room (sıcaklık), an exfoliating scrub (kese), and a foam massage. Unlike many tourist-trap hamams, this is architectural and experiential excellence."

The Backstory

Built in 1580 by Mimar Sinan—the Ottoman Empire's greatest architect—for Admiral Kılıç Ali Paşa, this hamam was part of a larger complex including a mosque and madrasa. Sinan was 93 years old when he designed it, one of his final masterpieces. The hamam operated continuously until the 1970s when the neighborhood declined and it fell into disrepair. A meticulous 2009-2012 restoration by Turkish historian Ergin Çanak brought it back to its original splendor, winning international conservation awards.

Local Secret

"Book at least 2-3 days in advance, especially on weekends—this is Istanbul's most sought-after hamam. The full ritual (scrub, massage, private room) costs 1,500-2,500 TL but is worth it for the architecture and service quality. Bring your own swimsuit if modest; robes and towels are provided. Go midweek for a quieter experience."
