The Lakes (Badeseen)
"In summer, Berliners flee to the city's lakes (Badeseen)—Wannsee, Müggelsee, Schlachtensee, Plötzensee—for swimming, sunbathing, and grilling. These are natural lakes within city limits, surrounded by forests and beaches. FKK (Freikörperkultur—public nudity) is common, non-sexual, and culturally accepted at designated sections. It's pure nature, surprisingly clean water, and a stark contrast to urban Berlin. Locals bring beer, portable grills, and spend entire Sundays lakeside."

The Backstory
Berlin's lakes became recreational spaces in the 1800s-1900s as the city industrialized. Wannsee became famous for beach culture in the 1920s. FKK (nudist culture) has deep roots in German naturalism movements dating to the early 1900s. After WWII, East Germans especially embraced FKK as a form of freedom. The tradition continues today.
Local Secret
"Wannsee is the most famous but crowded—go to Schlachtensee or Krumme Lanke for fewer tourists. FKK areas are clearly marked; respect boundaries and don't stare. Bring cash for entrance fees (€3-5 at some lakes). Pack a picnic—lakeside food is expensive. Go on weekdays to avoid crowds. Water quality is surprisingly good and monitored."
