Akihabara Electric Town
"Akihabara ('Akiba') is the center of anime, manga, and otaku (geek) culture: multi-story electronics stores, anime shops, maid cafes, arcades, and adult goods stores. It's sensory overload—neon signs, cosplayers, and blaring J-pop. You can buy anything from retro video games to the latest tech gadgets. Maid cafes are surreal—waitresses in maid costumes serve food with performances. It's weird, wonderful, and uniquely Tokyo. Not for everyone."

The Backstory
Akihabara was Tokyo's post-WWII black market for electronics and radio parts. By the 1980s-90s, it became 'Electric Town' selling computers and gadgets. The 2000s shift to anime/manga culture happened as electronics moved online. Maid cafes opened in the early 2000s, cementing Akiba as otaku central. It's now a global pop culture pilgrimage site.
Local Secret
"Visit on weekends when cosplayers appear on Chuo Dori (pedestrian-only street). Electronics stores (Yodobashi, Sofmap) are massive—good for tax-free shopping. Anime shops (Animate, Mandarake) sell everything from manga to figures. Maid cafes are expensive (¥1,000+ cover) and awkward but memorable—@Home Cafe is famous. Arcades (GiGO, Taito Station) have retro games and crane games. It's overwhelming—don't try to see everything."
