Top of the Rock

"Top of the Rock is the observation deck atop Rockefeller Center (70 floors, 850 feet up) with 360° views of Manhattan, Central Park, and the Empire State Building. Built in 1933 in Art Deco style, it offers better views than the Empire State Building because you can actually see the Empire State Building from here. Three levels of outdoor decks allow unobstructed views. Sunset is prime time but requires timed tickets."

The Backstory

Rockefeller Center was built 1931-1939 during the Great Depression as a massive Art Deco complex. Top of the Rock originally opened in 1933, closed in the 1980s, and reopened in 2005 after renovation. The Christmas tree lighting tradition started in 1933. The skating rink opened in 1936.

Local Secret

"Book timed tickets online days in advance—sunset slots sell out. Arrive 30 minutes early for your time slot. The top (70th floor) has no barriers, just glass—better for photos than Empire State's caged fence. Sunrise tickets are cheapest and least crowded. Skip the VIP ticket—not worth extra cost. Go in winter to see the Christmas tree."
