The Backstory

Originally cleared for coffee plantations in the 1800s. Emperor Pedro II ordered reforestation in 1861—the first large-scale reforestation project in history. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Local Secret

"Hire a guide for safety and wildlife spotting (monkeys, toucans). The Cascatinha Waterfall trail is easy and beautiful. Don't hike alone—trails are isolated. Go in the morning before heat/rain."
